Consumer Information on Hearing Aids & Hearing Loss

Bone-Anchored Hearing Aids (BAHA)

Bone anchored hearing aids (BAHA) are used to treat persons who suffer from chronic ear infection, congenital hearing loss or single-sided deafness (SSD), where the middle ear is damaged. Unlike other hearing aids, BAHA hearing aids transmit sound through the bone of the skull rather than to the ear canal. This process is called direct bone conduction.

A small titanium post is implanted in the skull behind one ear, and a small rectangular sound processor is attached to the post. The surgery involved is very minor, and allows persons to experience clear sound when no other hearing aid would work satisfactorily.

This hearing aid works by a process called direct bone conduction (DBC). Because the cochlea of the ear is attached to the skull, the BAHA hearing aid provides a direct transmission path to both cochlea. Unlike other bone conduction hearing aids which rest against the skin, BAHA hearing aids deliver clear, high-quality sound.
